The University of Akron’s Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) and Military Science Department will host an open house Friday, March 4, at 9:30 a.m. to showcase their recently renovated facility in Schrank Hall South. The social gathering, which will include light refreshments, will highlight the improvements to the offices and classrooms in the ROTC center and recognize the University’s support for the expanding program, which has nearly doubled in the past two years.
“Ultimately, I think the renovations will benefit the University. We are thankful for their support in our program and now have a top quality facility to match our talented cadet battalion,” says Maj. Lindsey E. Smitley, adjunct professor, department of military science and leadership.
UA faculty and staff members who will be recognized at the open house for making the renovations possible include Mike Sherman, senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer; Ted Curtis, vice president, capital planning and facility management; John LaGuardia, vice president, public affairs and development; Rex Ramsier, vice provost, academic operations; and John O’Brien, vice president, capital planning and facility management.
For students, the Army ROTC serves as an educator on the tools, training and experiences they need to become officers in the U.S. Army. UA's Army ROTC prepares students for the work force and teaches them effective leadership skills that can be implemented in both military and civilian sectors. The program offers a variety of financial incentives, such as scholarship benefits, language studies, abroad opportunities and paid internships.
