Graphic design student Bradley Lutz has his video piece, titled "SELFDOM," in the exhibit.
"Idiosyncrasy," an exhibition featuring works by 13 graphic design students at The University of Akron's Myers School of Art, runs Nov. 14-23 at Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St. on the UA campus.
A reception is Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition, reception and parking are free. Exhibition hours are Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Curated by Assistant Professor Markus Vogl, the exhibition explores obsession and the creative process.
"The main goal of this exhibition is to better understand how idiosyncratic behaviors — such as obsessive/compulsive disorder or even a tic — can ehance or arrest an artist’s creativity," says Vogl.
Graphic design student Bradley Lutz, whose video piece, titled "SELFDOM," is part of the exhibit, made these observations.
"Whether it is large or small, everyone shows signs of obsession," notes Lutz. "My artwork is about my obsession with myself. Many people today are concerned with their self image. Looking at ourself in the mirror, or taking a photograph of ourself, emphasizes our self-indulgence. Any concern with our self image can be seen as reinforcing self-obsession. Using video in the exhibition, I will show a series of self-portraits to express my obsession with myself."
