Athletes and health professionals will gather Feb. 12 at Akron City Hospital for “Fueling the Endurance Athlete,” a conference organized by the advisory board of the Nutrition and Dietetic Programs at The University of Akron.
Open to the public, the daylong workshop will address training techniques, hydration and electrolytes, carbohydrates, vegetarian nutrition and other topics related to endurance athletes and performance.
Among the speakers are Jackie Dikos, a registered dietitian and competitive runner who qualified for the 2008 Olympic Team Trials, and Dr. Tom Bartosokas, a sports medicine doctor for Summa Health Systems.
Sports nutrition is one specialty of the UA Nutrition Center in Schrank Hall South. Dr. Lonnie Lowery, a faculty member in the UA School of Family and Consumer Sciences, works with students to provide services ranging from metabolic rate measurements and computerized dietary analyses to training table consults. The center’s services are available to UA athletes and coaches as well as the public.
