Meet the Current Social Work Students

Andrew Feltman (BSW Student, Akron Campus)

I chose social work as a career because of my positive experiences with community mental health providers who have supported me. I have seen my life and the lives of those around me affected by social injustice. It is my mission as a future social worker to empower and encourage clients to achieve their goals. Men are a minority in social work. It is a priority of mine to increase awareness and reduce stigmas surrounding men receiving therapy. The professors at UA have been helpful and supportive every step of the way in preparing me for my career. At Akron, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of diverse populations at Akron Children's Hospital, Oriana House, Summit DD, and now my field internship at the Blick Center. After graduation, I plan to pursue my MSW degree and focus on serving those with mental health challenges.

Makalin Sims (BSW Student, Wayne Campus)

I chose social work because I have always had a passion for helping people. My biggest motivation is that I am a first-generation college student. I chose Wayne campus to stay closer to home and continue to work part-time at my job. I also chose this route because it is less expensive than going to a big campus and allowed me to focus more on my studies with smaller class sizes. The biggest benefit is that I can be closer to my professors and get help from them more easily than at a large campus. My future career goal is to work with children or people with intellectual disabilities and help make a difference in their lives.

Sarah Flickinger (MSW Student, Wayne Campus)

I chose social work because I value the importance of human relationships. I am passionate about learning from others and helping individuals overcome challenges in their lives. I graduated in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in social work and am currently pursuing my masters. The professors at UA have been supportive, insightful, and understanding. This has meant a lot to me since I go to school and work full time as well as being a mother. Upon graduation, I will continue being a therapist and work towards my independent licensure. I hope to one day work as a school-based counselor.

Shae Gorin (MSW Student, Akron Campus)

I chose social work because I am passionate about helping others. The support and
encouragement I received throughout my life has been critical to my growth and
helped me when I needed it the most. It is what drives me to pursue a career that
would allow me to provide the same pivotal support given to me. Initially, the decision
to begin UA’s MSW program was difficult. Social work differed from my bachelor’s
in East Asian Studies and engagement in Columbus’ City Year AmeriCorps program.
However, after a semester of working in the field and being surrounded by my professors
and peers, I know I made the right decision. After completing my MSW degree, I hope to
work with kids as a counselor.
