Pre-Eclipse Talks: "A New Day" A Spiritual Awakening of Earth's Children

Join the Institute for Human Science, Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences, and Urban STEM Center to celebrate and prepare for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse! Indigenous storytellers Sharon Bird (Opaskwayak Cree First Nation) and Shianne Eagleheart (Haudenosaunee-Seneca; Executive Director, Red Bird Center) will share cultural traditions and preparations for a solar eclipse. They will be joined by additional faculty and student speakers from The University of Akron. Attendees will also have the opportunity to pick up a free ISO certified solar eclipse viewer and make their own pinhole solar viewer!

This event is free and open to the public. Please note that this Institute-sponsored event will take place at the Crouse Hall Auditorium, Room 101, located on The University of Akron campus.

Full Program

5:00 PM - 5:15 PM: Professor of Physics Dr. Sergei Lyuksyutov will present Ring of Fire 2024.

5:15 PM - 5:30 PM: Professor of History Dr. Kevin Kern will present From Sun-Swallowing to Saros-Cycling: Predicting Eclipses in the Ancient World.

5:30 PM - 5:45 PM: Professor of Physics Dr. Ben Yu-Kuang Hu will present The 1919 Solar Eclipse and Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

5:45 PM - 6:30 PM: Indigenous storytellers Sharon Bird and Shianne Eagleheart will present "A New Day" A Spiritual Awakening of Earth's Children.

6:30 PM - 6:45 PM: Professor of Practice Karen Plaster joins students in the LeBron James Family Foundation School of Education to discuss how they are contributing to the collection of solar eclipse data for the Einstein Dynamic Eclipse Broadcast Initiative.
