The University of Akron’s Summit College can save students 44 percent on their tuition through its new Technical Experience Assessment (TEA) portfolio preparation workshops. Workshops will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from May 26 to July 14.

Designed for students interested in building portfolios that would allow them to trade their work experience for college credit, the TEA workshops provide step-by-step guidance and instruction on assembling relevant experience into a logical, standardized format — the portfolio — for review by the faculty. Students studying criminal justice, early childhood development, fire protection, community service technology, emergency medical services, paralegal studies, hospitality management, customer information systems, office administration, marketing and sales and business management could earn up to 24 semester hours in technical coursework for their prior work experience in these areas.
In a recent report about prior learning programs in the United States, The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning revealed that adults enrolled in prior learning programs complete their programs of study and graduate at a much higher rate than other adult students, according to Susan Wynn, coordinator, Technical Experience Assessment Program at UA’s Summit College.
“The Technical Experience Assessment Program, while still in the pilot phase, has helped 12 students earn a combined total of 42 credit hours,” Wynn says. “One part-time student will be able to graduate one semester early because of earning credit by preparing portfolios for two courses.”
