Sharalyn Laster, assistant professor of bibliography and government documents and reference librarian at The University of Akron’s Bierce Library, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Federal Depository Library Council.

The 15-member council advises the Public Printer on policy matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The FDLP, which traces its roots to 1813, provides access across the United States to the published information of all three branches of the government through partnerships with more than 1,220 libraries ranging from public libraries to research universities.

“This is a very prestigious appointment for a documents librarian and is particularly noteworthy because it comes so early in Laster's career,” says Cheryl Kern-Simirenko, dean of University Libraries.

Laster, who earned a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007, is active in the American Library Association’s Government Documents Round Table (GODORT), American Library Association of Ohio and Ohio GODORT. As a council member, she plans to maintain the link between the public and government information in the electronic environment, and identify ways to meet the changing trends of library users and those seeking information.
