Tiny books have generated a big media buzz when an exhibition of 90 of them, organized by the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art at The University of Akron, opened this month in Edinburgh, Scotland.
“Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books” has garnered extensive television, print and Web coverage in Great Britain. BBC Scotland and Scottish National Television have aired interviews with Del Rey Loven, director of the Myers School of Art, who was in Edinburgh to install the exhibition at Edinburgh University’s main library in the city’s George Square and to chair a panel of scholars at The Centre for the History of the Book.

The Scottish Daily Mirror, Guardian, Scotsman, and Edinburgh Evening News newspapers have featured the exhibition in their print and online editions.
None bigger than a playing card, the books are by graphic designers, sculptors and printmakers from 14 countries. Some were created using unconventional materials and innovative bookmaking techniques. All were gathered by Professor Hui-Chu Ying, who teaches printmaking at the UA Myers School of Art.
Exhibition visitors are encouraged to touch and open the books to see the poems, humorous text and intricate drawings inside. “Opening the pages, we venture into a foreign world,” observes Loven. “Small objects like this are captivating. They transport us beyond the confines of our everyday experience and we are utterly consumed.”
The tiny books have also been shown in Spain, China, Argentina and Finland, and are continuing on to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, after the Edinburgh exhibition closes this week.
