Joseph P. Kennedy, distinguished professor of polymer science and chemistry, has 107 issued U.S. patents to his credit.
Dr. Joseph Kennedy, distinguished professor of polymer science and chemistry at The University of Akron, was named one of the American Chemical Society's (ACS) fellows for 2012. Kennedy is among the 96 scientists honored for demonstrating outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and for making important contributions to ACS. The ACS fellow program began in 2009 when 163 fellows were announced.
A world-renowned scientist, researcher and inventor, Kennedy has 107 issued U.S. patents, including the biocompatible polymer coating on Boston Scientific's TAXUS® drug-eluting cardiovascular stent, which as been implanted in millions of patients worldwide.
"Dr. Kennedy is among the most prominent polymer chemists in the world. He has made important advancements in the field for over five decades and he continues to produce new results and applications," says College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering Dean Dr. Stephen Z.D. Cheng, R.C. Musson and Trustees Professor of Polymer Science. "Dr. Kennedy is of tremendous value to the college and a role model for the up-and-coming generation."
Kennedy is the second UA faculty member recognized as an ACS fellow.
Robert "Bob" Weiss, Department of Polymer Engineering chair and Hezzleton E. Simmons Professor of Polymer Engineering, was named an ACS fellow in 2010.
