Think you can't get scholarship money because your grade point average isn't high enough? Think again.
University of Akron students will once again be able to “call the shots” and win scholarships based on their pool shooting skills at the annual Barry Lefkowitz Scholarship 8-Ball Billiards Tournament.
The tournament will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at UA's Student Union Game Room. Nearly 200 students are expected to participate. The deadline for student registration is Nov. 1.
Founded in 1997, the tournament is funded by Barry Lefkowitz, retired senior vice president at Salomon Smith Barney in Cleveland. Lefkowitz, a 1966 marketing graduate of the university, was UA’s 1965-66 billiards champion.
The tournament is free and open to current UA students. The first-place finisher will earn a $1,000 scholarship and his or her name will be placed on the game room’s “Hall of Fame.” Second- and third-place winners will receive $500 and $250, respectively. All top three players will receive trophies.
Doors open at 8 a.m. For more information, call 330-972-7553.
A 9-Ball Scholarship Tournament in March also is named for Barry Lefkowitz.
