Bill Viau and Becky Hoover, interim co-directors of human resources, accepted UA's award Nov. 10 in Columbus.
The Ohio Psychological Association (OPA) has chosen The University of Akron as a 2010 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award winner.
The OPA's Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards annually recognize organizations that make a commitment to programs and policies that enhance the quality of the work environment for its employees in the areas of: employee involvement; work-life balance; employee growth and development; health and safety; and employee recognition. According to the OPA, a psychologically healthy workplace increases workers' job satisfaction and loyalty to their employers.
Becky Hoover and Bill Viau, interim co-directors of human resources, accepted UA's award at a luncheon during the OPA's 2010 Convention <http://www.ohpsych.org/convention.aspx> Nov. 10 in Columbus. UA also has been nominated for the Healthy Workplace Award at the national level.
Open communication is the key
"The University of Akron's commitment to shared leadership has been a consistent priority of our president, Luis Proenza," says Hoover. "Maintaining open channels of communication is central to achieving our organizational mission. This mission-centered approach to human resources drives all that we do. We are honored that OPA recognized the University for our initiatives, and we are excited to be considered for the national award as well."
UA received the award for several reasons, including its workplace mediation program; health and safety initiatives; a wellness culture; growth and development opportunities for employees. These high points led to increased employee satisfaction, as well as decreased absenteeism, conflict and turnover.
OPA has honored 20 businesses in the past as Psychologically Healthy Workplaces. The evaluation process consists of several steps, including an online application and an on-site visit. Additional 2010 award winners include Neundorfer, Inc. of Willoughby, Union Hospital of Dover and SSOE Group of Toledo.
