UA enables students to turn life/work experience into credit

08/04/2011

Students with five or more years of applicable work and/or life experience could receive college credit from The University of Akron's Summit College. Through UA's Technical Experience Assessment Program, or TEA, students can earn as many as 24 semester hours in technical coursework.

The next series of TEA workshops will be held Thursdays, Sept. 29 to Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at UA’s Summit College in the Polsky Building in downtown Akron. Applications are due Sept. 7.

Eligibility requires students to file an application with TEA Coordinator Susan Wynn. Accepted students can then enroll in the program, which provides step-by-step guidance and instruction on assembling relevant experience into a logical, standardized format — the portfolio — for review by faculty members.

Students studying criminal justice, early childhood development, fire protection, community service technology, emergency medical services, paralegal studies, hospitality management, computer information systems, marketing, sales and business management have earned a total of 105 hours of credit through TEA workshops at UA during the past four years, according to Wynn.
