UA Homecoming featuring arts to Zips Oct. 3-9

Zips fans will be out in full force to cheer on their team at the 2 p.m. Homecoming Game against Florida International on Oct. 8.

Homecoming 2011 at The University of Akron is bigger and bolder than ever before, with more than 30 events from arts to Zips on Oct. 3-9.

Events include a "Blue, Gold, and Soul" concert with jazz icon Herbie Hancock on Oct. 7 and a performance by alumni-comedian George Wallace on Oct. 8.

Campus tours aboard the Roo Express, dance classes for children, a Homecoming dance, art exhibitions, and Zips football, volleyball and soccer games are also among the events.

Oct. 3-8

  • Photo Fictions: Staged, Constructed and Altered Images — Free. Exhibition at the Emily Davis Gallery at UA's Myers School of Art in Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St. Curated by Professor Penny Rakoff, the exhibition features works by contemporary photographers. Through Oct. 22.   • Spirit Parade and Pep Rally — Free. Featuring campus organizations, the parade steps off at 5:30 p.m. from E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall and proceeds through campus to the Pep Rally at Coleman Common behind Buchtel Hall.
  • Concert by the UA Jazz Combos — Free. 8 p.m. in Guzzetta Recital Hall.

  • Ross "The Intern" Mathews

    Ross "The Intern" Mathews     — Free. Open only to current UA students with Zip Cards and their guests (one guest per student), 8 p.m. on the Main Stage of E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Mathews has interviewed some of the biggest stars in the world and has made the nation laugh all the way. During the past eight years, Mathews has traveled all over as a correspondent for "The Tonight Show" and the "Jay Leno Show," interviewing everyone from Oscar winners to British royalty.     "Blue, Gold, and Soul" Concert with Herbie Hancock     — 8 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. During his five-decade career, Hancock has won an Academy Award for his "Round Midnight" film score and 14 Grammys, including 2008 Album of the Year. His compositions — including "Cantaloupe Island," "Maiden Voyage," "Watermelon Man," "Chameleon" and "Rockit" — are contemporary standards that influence acoustic, electronic jazz, R&B and modern rock. This summer, UNESCO named Hancock as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Saturday, Oct. 8

  • Homecoming 2011 Info Center and Check-in — Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Coleman Common behind Buchtel Hall.
  • 5K Homecoming 2011 Run/Walk — The cost to register before Sept. 30 is $18; registration after Sept. 30 or the day of the race is $20. Starting at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field at 8 a.m. Event sponsors are UA's Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education, the Sport Science Academy, and Student Recreation and Wellness Services. The course travels through the UA campus and is mostly flat with a few rolling hills. This fast course starts on the outdoor track and finishes on the 50-yard-line of Summa Field.
