Akron Early College High School (AECHS), offered by The University of Akron's Summit College and Akron Public Schools, invites parents of eighth-graders to learn about the innovative school on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m. in the first floor atrium of the Polsky Building at The University of Akron.
A second informational meeting will take place Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. at the East Community Learning Center, 80 Brittain Road, Akron.
The AECHS, which allows students to earn an associate degree or up to two years of college credits toward a bachelor's degree, free of charge, will accept about 100 student applicants for 2012 admission.
Dedicated students will benefit from opportunity
"Akron Early College High School gives young adults the opportunity to initiate a turning point in their families' histories, as first-generation college students," says Stan Silverman, associate provost, dean of University College and dean of Summit College, which facilitates AECHS. "The success of this rigorous academic program is due, in great part, to the dedication of its students.”
Eligibility requires students to receive consent from their parents to participate in the program. The students also must provide their own transportation, possess a desire to earn an associate degree, adhere to contract requirements and express the potential to make the most of this opportunity. Further eligibility requirements will be presented at the meetings.
Akron Early College High School, one of 10 early colleges in Ohio, welcomed its first class of students in 2007. These 59 students became the school's first-ever graduates on May 1, 2011.
