April 12 the deadline for UA adult learners to apply for Osher Scholarship

Joshua Jackson’s dreams of becoming a registered dietitian and working at the Cleveland Clinic are that much closer to coming true, thanks, in part, to the Bernard Osher Reentry Scholarship for Adult Students he received as a student here at UA.

The scholarship was established by The Bernard Osher Foundation to provide assistance to adult learners who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education. It offers a financial incentive, as well as important recognition, for the most qualified students to work toward degree completion and, ultimately, fulfill their career objectives.

"Even though the scholarship was monetary, it was actually a gift of time," the 34-year-old Jackson, now a senior, wrote in a letter to the Osher Foundation. "The scholarship allowed me to work less, focus more on my academics and become more involved in college life."

Scholarship applications are now being taken through April 12 for the 2013-14 academic year, says Laura Conley, director of UA Adult Focus, which provides a variety of academic support services for adult learners.

Students selected to be Osher Scholars will:

• Be between 25 and 50 years of age
• Have been away from school for a minimum of 5 years
• Be working toward the completion of first baccalaureate degree
• Be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours)
• Have a minimum of one semester completed at The University of Akron with a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA.
