Learn how to Wine, Dine, & Act Fine

09/25/2012

Enjoy a $5, five-course meal while learning and polishing critical dining interview skills.

Imagine that you are at a dinner table with a potential employer; would you know which fork to use first? Which glass is yours? What to do with your napkin?

Knowledge of proper dining etiquette during an interview will give you an edge over other candidates.

That etiquette will be taught during the Career Center and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. luncheon titled "Wine, Dine and Act Fine" on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union 335. You will learn important dos and don'ts while enjoying a delicious five-course meal. Reserve your spot today by calling 330-972-7747 or sending a message to career@uakron.edu. Tickets are just $5.

Employers may ask you to lunch or dinner in order to assess your social skills. You are not there to enjoy a free meal; your communication skills and ability to work under pressure is being evaluated.

One of the most common mistakes during a dining interview is forgetting what you are there for.

"One student didn't know which drink was his, so he just nervously paid attention to everyone else until he knew what to do," said LuAnn Coldwell, senior assistant director at career services at The University of Akron. "This is not the purpose of the interview. You should be less focused on nerves and etiquette, and more focused on trying to make a good impression."
