Dr. Stephen Cheng
Dr. Stephen Z.D. Cheng, Robert C. Musson Trustees Professor of Polymer Science and dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, will be inducted into the 12th class of the American Chemical Society Division (ACS) of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) Fellows for “seminal contributions to the field of liquid crystal displays” at the ACS National Meeting March 25 in San Diego.
One of four PMSE Fellows named this year, Cheng is an internationally recognized polymer scientist. He has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals and the book, "Phase Transitions in Polymers: The Role of Metastable States." Cheng also is the senior editor of the journal Polymer, the International Journal for the Science and Technology of Polymers. His co-inventions have been awarded 10 patents, many of which have been licensed for commercialization, including an optical film that allows peripheral viewing on LCD screens.
Prior to achieving the coveted PMSE honor, Cheng was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2006), Fellow of the American Physical Society (1994) and Fellow of the North American Thermal Analysis Society (1993). Most recently (2008), he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Cheng is known for his visionary leadership and for strengthening educational and research programs at UA. He continues to maintain a large research effort involving more than a dozen Ph.D. candidates and several post-doctorates.
