THE VISION OF many area partners, including The University of Akron, became reality with the dedication of the new Akron Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics High School, on Thursday, Sept. 27.
The school, which houses about 100 ninth graders this year, is located in the former Central-Hower High School. Other grades will be added in the next few years.

UA President Luis M. Proenza stressed the university’s commitment to STEM education and the importance of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum to empower learners to succeed in a global society. When the students in the STEM middle school and new high school excel, he says, they can take full advantage of the opportunities awaiting them in college and in their careers.
Proenza also underscored the importance STEM students represent for the future of the region – when they graduate from the Akron Public Schools, they will be highly sought after by colleges and universities for their depth of knowledge in science and mathematics and, more importantly, where their own region supports and furthers their success.
In addition to UA, the STEM high school is the result of a pioneering partnership comprised of:
- Akron Public Schools,
- the City of Akron,
- the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation,
- Akron Tomorrow and
- the Greater Akron Chamber.
