WHY STUDY SPANISH?
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world with over 485 million speakers! It is the official language of over 21 countries including Spain, most countries in Central and South America, several Caribbean countries and is one of the official languages of Equatorial Guinea (Central Africa). In the United States, there are over 50 million people who speak Spanish as their native or second language [1]. Once can see why it would be very beneficial to learn Spanish, it ushers in opportunities to meet new people as well as incorporate it into your career path!
Having experience with the Spanish language can create opportunities with your career giving you a competitive edge! Only 20% of Americans are bilingual compared to the 56% of Europeans [2]. If you are considering a career in business, marketing, commerce, etc. being able to communicate with domestic and international clients, suppliers, and buyers can be the difference between your company landing a contract and the deal going to a company better trained in languages! The American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has reported that 25% of U.S. employers have lost business due to lack of language skills!
If you are considering a career in medicine or healthcare, it would also be beneficial to learn Spanish. "Language concordance between patients and physicians is an important factor in providing safe and effective health care, with Spanish as the predominant and fastest growing non-English language in the United Sates." [3] Language has been linked as a major factor to health disparities for patients who prefer languages aside from English. With that barrier, there is a higher risk of errors and poor health outcomes.

STUDY ABROAD IN SPAIN
DISSTA will run Summer 2024!
The Spanish Experience is an immersion learning experience spent living and studying in Spain. The program is centered in the city of Valladolid, whose university (UVa) was founded in the early 13th century by Alfonso VIII, King of Castile. The classes are held in the Miguel Delibes campus, located about 10 minutes outside of downtown Valladolid. In addition to studying Spanish at the university, the students live with Spanish families (who do not speak English!). This will not only give them the chance to improve their Spanish speaking skills, but they will get the opportunity to experience first-hand the Spanish lifestyle and culture.
